This chart illustrates the effect of shear in punching applications. Multiply the tonnage requirement by the appropriate factor to determine the new tonnage.

Eg: A 3/4 dia hole in 16 ga mild steel requires 4.4 tons. However, if 1/16 shear is put on the punch tip, it would only take 2.2 tons (4.4 x .50). Furthermore, if the material was aluminum instead of mild steel, it would only take 1.32 tons (2.2 x .60).
